Essential oils for focus and concentration can help get your mind back in the game and focus and concentrate on things for a length of time. Concentration is the action or power to direct your attention or mental force into something. To concentrate on something is what allows us to learn or to understand what is being spoken, taught, or what is in front of us at the time. Without concentration, our brain simply would not collect any information about what we saw or learned.

Focus is what directs the brain to be aware of something important. For some, focusing and concentrating on things might be hard as it is easy for the mind to wander as the things around them are not interesting.

Constant distractions are making it even harder for people to concentrate nowadays, as mobile phones make it easy to be distracted with regular notifications for various apps, texts, and alerts.

What Causes the Loss of Concentration and Focus?

With the digital age in full swing, the average attention span has dramatically shortened ever since the year 2000 with the mobile phone age. A study was done by Microsoft Corp., Generally, people would lose concentration and focus after eight seconds, bringing an all-time low from the previous twelve seconds prior. The study has shown that the average human being has last concentration then that of a golden fish with nine seconds rather than eight the new study shows.

With each younger generation getting worse as time goes on with a survey conducted that 77% of people aged 18-24 would say “yes” when asked, “when nothing has my attention, the first thing I do is reach for my phone,” and when related to those over the age of 65 only 10% said yes.

Lemon – Mostly known for its uplifting and energizing properties, it also has fantastic benefits to concentration and focus. Also, it helps to provide more relaxation and to cut back on the stress that may have built up throughout the day. Studies have been conducted that show lemon to impact stress levels through the regulation of dopamine and serotonin in the brain.

Studies have shown rosemary, lemon, lavender, and orange essential oils to help improve cognitive function in patients that were affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Lemon also possesses antidepressant-like and anxiolytic properties that are known to reduce anxiety and stress within the body, as shown in a study published in 2006, showing the effects of lemon oil in mice.

Research that was done in Japan showed when inhaled lemon increase typing accuracy by 54% fewer errors, compared to 33% less when smelling jasmine, and 20% less with lavender.

Peppermint – Peppermint harnesses properties that can promote more focus and concentrate while also adding many other uses.  Also, as one of the most popular and widely used essential oils on the market that increases mental alertness, it helps to relieve headaches when they occur after being in stressful environments. The fragrance of peppermint essential oil is known to help settle upset stomachs and curb nausea.

Research that was published in 1990 stated the inhalation of peppermint essential oil improved mental alertness, focus, and concentration.

Another study was done on peppermint also showed a boosted accuracy of memory when inhaled.

Note: A later study showed that eating peppermint did not have an effect of memory as opposed to the inhalation of peppermint.

Rosemary – Recent studies have shown this scent to help sharpen the senses and improve memory. Studies have shown rosemary oil to be effective in boosting mental awareness and being able to clear the mind to help one study and to help aide memory improvement.


Essential Oil Recipes for Focus and Concentration

Quick and Easy Concentration Inhaler Blend

Essential oils can help you simply by just inhaling them, as the particles of the essential oils go directly to your brain via your nose. Inhaling this blend will improve your mental alertness to help you concentrate more.

What You Need:

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
3 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
Small Glass Bowl
Tweezers
Personal Inhaler

What to Do:

  1. In a small glass bowl, add essential oils. You may add, depending on your preference (up to fifteen drops).
  2. Remove the cover (bottom) of the inhaler to remove cotton wick of the inhaler.
  3. Drop cotton wick into the bowl to soak up the essential oils.
  4. Using tweezers, drop the wick back into the inhaler. Replace cover and press down hard to insert into place.
  5. Use as needed for concentration, inhale 5 – 6 times.

 

Energizing Concentration Inhaler Blend

Concentrating on things to learn can be very tiring and very hard to learn things when your brain is tired. Inhaling this a few times with help energize your body to help you concentrate!

What You Need:

5 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

What You Need:

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
3 drops Lemon Essential Oil
Glass Container
Small Glass Bowl

What to Do:

  1. In a small glass bowl, add essential oils. You can add carrier oil if the scent is too strong.
  2. Replace ball insert and cap and shake to blend.
  3. To use, simply place into a diffuser and inhale.
