Wanda Arnold, one of our recent graduates from Texas wanted to use her research paper assignment as a chance to write about how she incorporated essential oils into her family’s daily routine. Being from a dry state (with the exception of dealing with mold caused by hurricane Harvey), she decided she wanted to explore how to use essential oils for allergies.

SOUTHEAST, TEXAS. It is still summer, but my grandson and son both are full of congestion and pain.  My son is always using his nose inhaler from over the counter. That is why I have decided to research allergies to help my family.

I am so tired of hearing are you sick and tired of being sick and tired!  Nothing ever works.  I am excited to be learning the cure for allergies. Normally our worst allergy seasons are:

  • March during the spring when all the beautiful flowers are blooming!
  • September when the ragweed is at its peak!

So for some reason, this summer is proving to be a bad time for allergies. My hope is to use the natural power of essential oils to alleviate allergies.

Allergies are some of the worse things that a person can experience.  They are very irritating and can also be a sign that they are some underlying disease or problems.  In this article, we’ll learn about some of the best essential oils for different types of allergies plus understand how to use the essential oils so we can try the essential oils out.

Allergies are one of the costliest ailments in current time.  It never goes away, its just keeping going!  It is also one of the most miserable illnesses.  Among the world’s most common ailments, doctors can’t cure them.  They just put you and your poor kids on weekly shots and daily medicines. This is what they did to us for years.  They did absolutely nothing for us.  Neither my sons or myself found any relief having done this twice in the last twenty years.  The over the counter stuff is a joke. It just keeps taking your money and offers no results.  In fact most of the time you just get worst!  My sons are now 42 and 46 and still suffer daily!

Essential oils provide a naturally safe, gentle, effective alternative to prescribed or over the counter medicines.  Essential oils, for the most part, do not have side effects as some medicines do.

Why would we rely on over the counter drugs to sooth pains and aches from allergic reactions, when we can experience the natural remedies using essential oil with so many to select from?  We will never run out of choices of essential oils since they are a natural product and are available to anyone.

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is a damaging immune system response to a substance that does not bother most other people.  The symptoms vary widely.  Some typical reactions are itching, selling runny nose, asthma, sneezing, and persistent coughing.

Histamine is a chemical released as a result of an allergic reaction.  An allergic reaction which causes sneezing, itching, way more mucus, swelling, wheezing. Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a response to airborne allergens: pollen, pet dander, dust mites.

Essential oils known to help combat this is lavender, roman chamomile, and rose.

Histamine is protein molecules acting as neuro transmitters produced during an allergy attach.  Histamine always circulating within the body at anytime stimulates the brain to produce large amounts of histamine.

In reality, it isn’t any substance that is the problem, but the way our body reacts to it.  The problem is when our body identifies something as harmful that substance is an allergen.  Typically sensitivity to a particular allergen the bodies immune system over reacting to allergens.  This can cause wheezing, sneezing, itching, coughing, watery eye, headaches.

German Chamomile neutralizes allergies and increases the ability of the skin to regenerate.  You can use Rosemary and lavender to help in healing allergies.

For some individuals, the use of peppermint oil has eliminated the need for allergy shots! But keep in mind to always follow directions for use.  Always, Always check cautions of each essential oil. It is It is also advisable to consider a skin test before usage.

Essential oils work to prevent allergies from happening again too but do not overuse as excessive application of essential oils may trigger other body reactions.  The redness of skin experienced when applying essential oils may indicate too much was applied or not enough carrier oil was used when applied to the skin.

Use only use 100% therapeutic essential oils for best results for any allergies. If not 100% therapeutic essential oil it may contain some impurities that can trigger a reaction.,  you want to avoid that.

In this paper, Ginny Yong, recent graduate of Aroma Hut Institute discusses the use of essential oils for hair loss in women. She has included several recipes to try at home. For more information, please obtain a copy of Organic Beauty With Essential Oil or Therapeutic Blending With Essential Oil for more guidance on blending techniques.

Hair is viewed as an important feature to a woman’s beauty since time immemorial, as it is perceived to be her “crowning glory.” For it is mentioned in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 11:15 “but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.” (1)

Lustrous hair has played an important factor to a woman’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Good healthy hair is critical as it serves as a reflection of a woman’s notion of identity and self. However, hair loss problem is prevalent in current modern society. The hectic pace of life in the modern world has burdened women with added factors which lead to hair loss such as stress, anxiety, depression, etc. Juggling work pressure and family obligations have further exacerbated the problems of hair loss among women.

Societal norms dictate that hair is an essential part of a woman’s sexuality and gender identity, and any hair loss generates feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety from a perception of diminished attractiveness. Women are more likely than men to have a lowered quality of life and to restrict social contact as a result of hair loss. While men do consider androgenetic alopecia an unwanted and stressful event that diminishes their body image satisfaction (studies indicate 50% of men with mild hair loss and 75% with moderate to severe hair loss report concern), society tends to regard hair loss in men as expected and normal due to the greater visibility of hair loss within men. (2)

Hair loss, also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from part of the head or body. (3) There are many commonly known causes of alopecia in women. Factors such as hormonal imbalances (pregnancy or menopause), excessive stress (physical and emotional) and environmental exposure (chronic use of harsh hair products) all contribute to alopecia.

There are a range of medical treatments for alopecia, but they are not without side effects. The most common treatment involves the use of Minoxidil which is approved by the FDA for female pattern hair loss. It can reduce or stop the rate of alopecia in some women and can even help hair grow back in certain cases. However such treatment requires constant application of the hair loss tonic and alopecia will resume once the treatment is stopped. Corticosteroids can also help regrow hair for women with alopecia areata as they are known to prevent the immune system from attacking hair follicles. However, there are potentially serious side effects if corticosteroids are used for prolonged periods of time.

The prevalence of alopecia and the absence of safe treatments with long-term effectiveness have brought forth the question of whether aromatherapy can be used as a sustainable solution to combat hair loss in women.

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years as natural and traditional remedies. It is a holistic therapy which involves the use of pure essential oils extracted from various parts of plant and trees. The essential oils in holistic aromatherapy treatments offer many physical, mental, and emotional benefits, helping to achieve better health, greater beauty, and improved hygiene. Aromatherapy helps by stimulating the blood vessels that supply hair follicles, nourishing them and encouraging hair regrowth. (4) The natural essential oils used in aromatherapy are also non- invasive and can be used suitably for longer periods of time.

However, scientific studies to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy are few until in recent times. A ground-breaking randomized trial of aromatherapy used in the successful treatment of alopecia areata was recently published in the Archives of Dermatology (5). The researchers conducted a seven month study proving that aromatherapy is a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata.

The essential oils used in this trial were oils with hair-growth promoting properties namely:

  1. Cedarwood (Cedrus Atlantica)
  2. Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia)
  3. Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis)
  4. Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris)

The trial involves eighty-six patients diagnosed with alopecia areata condition. Half of them massaged a blend of essential oils into their scalp daily. The blend is made up of Cedarwood (2 drops), Lavender (3 drops), Rosemary (3 drops) and Thyme (2 drops) mixed in a carrier oil, which is a combination of jojoba oil (3ml) and grapeseed oil (20mil). The control group used only carrier oils for their daily massage. An impressive 44% of the group using the essential oils showed improvement compared to only 15% in the control group. The degree of improvement on photographic assessment was found to be highly significant.

Another research study done in Asia recently in 2012 also showed that Rosmarinus Officinalis leaf extract (R-O ext) is a promising drug for hair growth (6). Topical administration of R-O ext improved hair regrowth in mice that experienced hair growth interruption induced by testosterone treatment. The efficacy for the treatment of androgenic alopecia was also studied. R-O ext was found to be effective in inhibiting the binding of dihydrotestosterone to androgen receptor for treating androgenic alopecia.

It is indeed gratifying to learn that the use of aromatherapy is successful in improving the common hair loss problem faced by women. Among the variety of essential oils available, the following oils prove to be the most effective in targeting alopecia. It is of particular importance to use only therapeutic grade oils manufactured by a reputable company.

One of the earliest plants to be used for food and medicine. It has been used for a broad range of complaints including respiratory and circulatory disorders, liver congestion, rheumatic digestive pain, skin, and hair problem. It has been used extensively to promote hair growth and to stimulate the scalp.(7) It is also used in the treatment of depression, migraine, headaches, anxiety, and stress.(8) This is critical as Rosemary oil plays an influential role in targeting one of the common causes of hair loss which is excessive stress.

Precautions: Avoid during pregnancy; not to be used with epilepsy

Lavender has a well-established tradition as a folk remedy and is considered as the most versatile essence therapeutically. (7) It is the mother of all essential oils which acts as a powerful mood tonic that brings calm, relaxation and stress relief. Lavender oil is a natural antiseptic, antibiotic and slightly anti-fungal agent that is also a sedative and anti-depressant. (8) It is useful in all skin care due to its powers of healing and balancing properties.

Precautions: Not to be used with low blood pressure; avoid use during first and second trimester of pregnancy

Cedarwood oil is possibly the first to be extracted and used widely for its therapeutic properties in hair care. It is effective for scalp disorders like dandruff, greasy hair and hair loss. (7)

Precautions: Best avoided during pregnancy

Essential oils can assist to alleviate stress and depression, which are one of the leading causes of hair loss. In addition, essential oils can enhance one’s emotional, physical and mental health equilibrium. Aromatherapy offers a way to treat hair loss by getting to the root of the problem.

This paper provides a holistic yet natural alternative for women who are experiencing the detrimental effects of hair loss.

For “Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.” Ezekiel 47:12 (1)

Resembling a giant fennel plant, Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua, member of the carrot family) was used in the ancient world as incense. Today, galbanum essential oil goes beyond its use as ingredient. Native to the Middle East and grown in the Mesopotamian area and West Asia, Galbanum has been imported since biblical times. Today it is cultivated in Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

Galbanum, also called Mother resin, is discharged from the roots and lower trunk of this small wild plant. It is harvested by slitting its stem a few inches above the ground, allowing the milky substance to flow out and harden. Its balsamic tears are round, yellow to brownish-yellow, translucent, and not larger than a pea.

Galbanum essential oil has been valued for its complex green, woody, balsam-like fragrance. At one time it was used in pharmaceuticals, but now it is mostly used as a food flavoring and as a perfume fixative. The Egyptians imported Galbanum resin in vast amounts, as it was a most treasured incense ingredient. In addition, Egypt used it for embalming and cosmetics.

Galbanum essential oil was esteemed for its medicinal and spiritual properties as mentioned in Exodus 30:34. Egyptian papyri records use of Galbanum as well as ancient Roman historians record use for it as antispasmodic, diuretic, and pain relieving properties.

Its yellow viscous liquid essential oil possesses an intensely green, fresh leafy odor with a dry woody back-note of balsamic, bark-like character.

Galbanum Essential Oil’s Healing Properties

Plant origin: Iran

Medicinal properties: Anti-infectious, analgesic, antispasmodic (light), stimulant, supports the kidneys, and helps during menstruation.

Traditional uses: Galbanum was esteemed for its medicinal and spiritual properties as mentioned in Exodus 30:34. Egyptian papyri as well as ancient Roman historians record use of Galbanum for its antispasmodic, diuretic, and pain relieving properties.

Other uses: Galbanum may also help with abscesses, acne, asthma, bronchitis, chronic coughs, cramps, cuts, indigestion, inflammation, muscular aches and pains, nervous tension, poor circulation, rheumatism, scar tissue, stress, wrinkles, and wounds.

Application: Apply topically.

Note: Though Galbanum has a low frequency, when combined with other fragrances such as Frankincense or Sandalwood, the frequency rises dramatically.

Uses for Galbanum

  • Rub 2-3 drops of Galbanum oil on the soles of your feet to help ease cramping during menstruation.
  • Apply a few drops of Galbanum essential oil on location for sore muscles.  If the affected area is large, blend with a few drops of olive or mustard seed oil.
  • Inhale Galbanum oil from the bottle when you need a lift.
  • Trouble focusing? Try rubbing a drop or two of Galbanum oil near the temples and on the back of your neck near the brain stem. Cup hands together and breathe deeply.
  • To clear up acne, apply 1 drop of Galbanum oil on blemish.
  • Rub a drop of Galbanum oil on your stomach for indigestion.
  • Diffuse or rub a couple of drops of Galbanum into scalp to relieve a headache.
  • For kidney/bladder concerns, try rubbing a couple of drops of Galbanum oil over kidneys.

 Galbanum’s Spiritual Significance

The Jewish Talmud suggests that Galbanum, a bitter, earthy gum resin from an Asiatic plant was included in the Holy Incense because Every communal fast that does not include the sinners of Israel is not a fast. This was because the Temple incense included spices with beautiful fragrances, but was considered incomplete without a less-than-fragrant aromatic such as Galbanum. Described by some modern Bible commentators as having a pleasant smell, Philo praises Galbanum, comparing it to air and calling it sweet smelling and says its smoke drives away serpents.

This sharp, biting pungent resin could be equated with some of the unpleasant things we need to pray about. We are required to examine ourselves carefully as we meditate on the Holy Scriptures,

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Yeshua Ha Mashiach is in you, except ye be reprobates? (II Corinthians 13:5)

A genuine self-examination can be a very unpleasant experience. The Jewish Talmud say, Chelbenah alludes to complete sinners. Like a Tziporen-fingernail, they are smooth and unblemished on the inside, and only darkened on the outside.

In Hebrew, Galbanum is Chelbenah. The Hebraic root is Cheleb, which means the fat or the richest part and Chalab, which means milk. Of the animal sacrifices in Scripture, the fat was reserved for God and burned as a soothing aroma to Him (Genesis 4:4, Leviticus 3:14-16).

In the Greek, Galbanum is simply a borrowing of the Hebrew word, so there is no chance of error in translation from Hebrew to Greek. It is mentioned in the Egyptian papyri and only once in the Old Testament as an ingredient of the sacred incense and once in the Apocrypha (Sirach 24:15).

Since the fat was considered Yahweh’s portion, it was not for human consumption. Spiritually, fat is symbolic of praise and thanksgiving, followed by the confession of sins (Genesis 4:4, Leviticus 3:14-16). Psalm 50:23 says,

Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

What joy it brings Yahweh when we come before Him with praise and thanksgiving and confess our sins and realize we are like filthy rags, unworthy and undeserving. Yahweh considers this His Cheleb. Hebrews 13:15 tells us,

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Geneva Bible notes explains, Now that the physical sacrifices are taken away, he teaches us that the true sacrifice of confession remain, which consist partly in giving thanks, and partly in liberality with which sacrifices indeed God is now delighted.

Hebrew Word: Galbanum
2464 hn”B.l.x, chelbenah khel-ben-aw’
Meaning: 1) galbanum 1a) a kind of resin or gum, ingredient of the holy incense
